The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team pulled away from a tight halftime score to defeat Bellevue 94-72 in non-conference basketball on Tuesday night, December 10.
The Defenders built a five point lead early but the Bruins tied it at 13-13 and 15-15, using a five point run to get the first tie. The two teams traded baskets late in the first quarter to keep the difference at two with Dordt leading 21-19.
Bellevue built the lead to 24-21 with 7:48 left in the half but a Payton Harmsen three-point basket tied the game at 24-24 moments later. A pair of Mya Chmielewski free throws gave Dordt a brief two-point lead but Bellevue again had an answer and rattled off four points in a row. The score was tied 30-30 near the midpoint of the period but Gabby Kreykes got a basket to go and Baylee Tetzlaff knocked down a couple free throws to expand the lead.
The difference grew to six but Dordt couldn’t hold the lead at six and settled for a 40-38 halftime difference.
The second half started with five unanswered by the Defenders and Dordt’s first double-digit lead came at 53-42 on a pair of Tetzlaff free throws. In all Dordt was able to outscore the Bruins 28-14 in the period on 10-18 field goal shooting.
The lead quickly grew to 30 in the fourth quarter and Dordt finished with a 94-72 win.
