Two Accidents Reported


On Tuesday, October 18, at 5:40 am, the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a two vehicle accident that occurred on Hwy 18 one mile west of Boyden, IA.

Ronald VandePol, age 57, from Hawarden, IA was driving a 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme eastbound on Hwy 18 when his vehicle stalled. VandePol was able to stop his vehicle on the side of the roadway. He exited the vehicle and in doing so, had the driver side door opened onto the travelled portion of the roadway. At that time, Eugene Pottebaum, age 79, from Rock Valley, IA was driving a 1998 Chevy S10, also eastbound on Hwy. 18, and stuck the open door of the VandePol vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Pottebaum was cited for damage to vehicle and VandePol was cited for stopping on the roadway.


On Monday, October 17, at 4:58 pm, the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred one mile west of Sheldon, IA on Highway 18; at the intersection of College Drive.


Travis Otto, age 19, of Cherokee, IA was eastbound on Hwy. 18 driving a 1994 Mazda Protégé. Johnathon Miller, age 20, of Sidney, IA was westbound on Hwy. 18, driving a 2002 Dodge Neon. Miller failed to see Otto as he was attempting a left turn which caused a collision of both vehicles.


Otto refused medical treatment at the scene. Miller was transported to Sanford Medical Center of Sheldon by the Sheldon Ambulance where he was treated for minor injuries and released.


Otto’s Mazda received $5,000 in damages and Miller’s Dodge had $6,000.


Miller was cited for failing to yield on a left turn.


The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Sheldon ambulance, fire, rescue and Police departments.
