Northwest Iowa — The Boyden Hull Rock Valley Nighthawk softball team opens State Tournament play on Tuesday at 12:30 in Fort Dodge.

The Nighthawks are the #7 seed in Class 3A and will take a 14-2 record into the quarterfinals against #2 seed Davenport Assumption who comes in at 19-5.

BHRV earned a spot in the State Tournament without ever hosting a regional game and all three wins had their share of drama. It started with a 7-6 win over Sheldon in a game played at Sioux Center. A five run bottom of the 8th inning made the Nighthawks a 7-6 winner.

From there it was on to Estherville where BHRV broke a 1-1 tie with a four run 8th inning to take a 5-2 win over the Midgets.

In the region finals at Spirit Lake the Nighthawks took a 10-9 lead into the top of seven and won a 16-10 slug fest with a six run 7th inning that put the game away and propelled them to the State Tournament.

Davenport Assumption spent their regional tournament run at home posting scores of 12-0, 12-0 and 10-0.
