The Dordt Defender men’s basketball team lost a 71-70 road decision to Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday night in Mitchell, South Dakota.

The Tigers took their first lead of the game at 8-5 and never trailed the rest of the half, building as much as a 33-21 lead before going into the intermission at 41-37. A Chandler Brunsting three-point basket closed the first half scoring.

Dordt rallied to tie the game at 48-48 on a Marcus Winterfeld three-point shot and it was tied again at 54-54. Wesleyan’s Jeffrey Schuch converted a free throw unlock the tie but Brunsting answered with a three-point shot to give Dordt its first lead since the opening minutes and the senior guard knocked down another three with 9:12 left for a 60-55 Dordt lead.

Wesleyan rallied for a lead at 65-64 but back to back baskets by Chad Barkema and Garrett Franken pushed Dordt ahead 68-65. The lead was short lived with back to back Wesleyan baskets for a 69-68 lead with 3:09 left. A pair of free throws by Wesleyan’s Sam McCloud put them up 71-68 and Dordt followed with three consecutive looks to tie the game with three-point shots but didn’t make any of them. Dordt eventually got to the free throw line with :27 left and Jesse Jansma made both ends of the one and one.

Wesleyan missed the front end of a one and one moments later and Dordt had the ball with :22 left. The Defenders ran their offense and didn’t get a shot and were forced to call timeout. After another timeout when they couldn’t get it in, Dordt inbounded to Franke near the three-point circle and his 18 footer was off the mark allowing Wesleyan to escape with the win.

Dordt will host Morningside on Saturday evening at 6:00.
