Dordt At Corn Palace Tonight

[1]The Defender women’s and men’s basketball teams will be traveling to Dakota Wesleyan on Wednesday, January 15 with the women’s game starting at 6:00 and the men’s game will follow at about 8:00.

Dakota Wesleyan is 13-5 this season and 6-4 in league play. The Tigers are 3-2 in their last five games and have losses in the league to Dordt, Jamestown, Concordia and Morningside. Through a quirk of scheduling the Tigers have not played Hastings at this point and are one game shy of the midpoint in conference play.

The Dakota Wesleyan men are 15-3 this season and 7-2 in the league. The Tigers have lost to Mount Marty and Morningside in the conference and Keiser in non-league play.

The Defenders are 16-3 this season and 8-3 in the GPAC with losses to Morningside, Concordia and Hastings.  The Defenders are 9-2 in their last 11 games since November 20.

Erika Feenstra is averaging a team high 19.6 points per game with 6.5 rebounds and she is making 64.1 percent of her field goals and is 81-103 from the free throw line through 19 games played. Karly Gustafson is averaging 10.3 points per game with 6.4 rebounds and she converts 59.5 percent of her field goals. Rachel Evavold is at 9.9 points per game with 5.6 rebounds and she is making 61 percent of her field goals.  Gabby Kreykes adds 7.4 points per game and Bailey Beckman is at 6.9.  Both have done all of their damage in reserve roles in 19 games appearances. Jordyn Van Maanen is averaging 6.1 points per game and has a team high 51 assists while Payton Harmsen is  second on the team with 50 assists and a 5.6 points per game average.

Dordt outscores teams 84.8-64.8 and convert 47.8 percent of its field goals and 31.7 percent of its three-point shots. The Defenders allow 37.7 percent field goal shooting and 26.3 from the arc.  Dordt is outrebounding teams 44.5-32.3 and have forced 244 turnovers by steals.

The Defender men are 15-5 this season and 6-4 in the league at the midpoint. Dordt is 7-1 since an overtime loss to Jamestown on December 4 and the Defenders are 11-2 since starting the year 4-3.

Garrett Franken leads the team with a 15.6 points per game average and 7.8 rebounds with 47 assists and 15 blocks. Jesse Jansma is at 13.4 points per game and is second on the team in made three-point baskets with 43. Cade Bleeker’s average is 11.4 points per game and he gets 4.3 rebounds.  He has made a team high 49 three-point shots and is converting 50.5 percent of his attempts from behind the arc. Chad Barkema is at 10.3 points per game and 5.2 rebounds. Barkema also has 17 steals, 14 blocked shots and 47 assists. Jansma is tops on the team with 57. Zach Bussard and Marcus Winterfeld are at 8.5 and 8.3 points per game and Jsoh Van Lingen and Ben Gesink each average 7.2 and 6.7 points per outing. Chandler Brunsting has also appeared in all 20 games for the Defenders and has 4.3 points per game with 37 assists.

Dordt is outscoring teams 87.5-75 and outrebound teams 41.2-35.7.  Dordt also converts 48 percent of its field goal tries and 40.3 percent of its three-point shots while limiting teams to 43.4 percent field goal shooting and 33.8 behind the arc.

Dordt will host Morningside on Saturday, January 18 before hosting Jamestown on January 22.
