The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team won its 10th game of the season on Monday night in a 90-76 non-conference win over Dakota State.
Dakota State grabbed an early 13-9 lead with 5:37 left in the first quarter. A Gabby Kreykes basket and a pair of Karly Gustafson free throws tied the game and Dordt took the lead 15-13 on an Erika Feenstra. Dordt pushed the lead to as much as six before the Lady Ts rallied to within 22-20 at the end of the first quarter.
After a slow start to the second quarter the Defenders got going with a five-point run to lead 36-26 with 3:07 left in the half. The ten-point lead came after Payton Harmsen hit a three-point basket. The lead got as large as 12 on three occasions before Dordt took a 42-32 lead into the half.
Dakota State used an aggressive start to the second half and went up 45-44 with a 13-2 run that was capped by a Sidney Fick three-point basket with 7:05. The lead lasted nine seconds with Mya Chmielewski knocking down a corner three-point basket for a 47-45 lead that ignited a 9-0 run. The Lady Ts trimmed the lead down to 53-49 with 3:45 left in the quarter but Dordt closed the period with a 17-2 advantage and pushed the lead to 70-51.
The lead grew to as many as 23 and was still at 21, 88-67 with 2:47 remaining. Dakota State managed to make it a more respectable 90-76 as Dordt spread its minutes liberally with two more conference games this week.
