The Morningside Mustang men were a 96-88 winner over Dordt on Saturday afternoon in Sioux City, Iowa in GPAC play.
A run early in the second half gave Morningside more than enough room to work with as they handed the Defenders their second loss in GPAC play.
Morningside led from the start with Zach Bussard giving the Defenders a brief lead at 18-17 with 12:35 left in the half and he knocked down another basket moments later for a 20-19 advantage. A Caleb Harmsen three and a Ben Gesink three gave Dordt a pair of two point leads, the last at 26-24 with 10:17 left in the first half.
The teams were tied 34-34 before the hosts settled for a 48-43 halftime lead.
The teams traded buckets up to 54-50 when the Mustangs went on a 12-0 run that ended with a pair of Chandler Brunsting free throws at the 13:00 mark. The lead grew to as many as 17 before Dordt sliced the lead to six on a basket by Marcus Winterfeld at 94-88 with :16 left in the game. Morningside converted a pair of free throws on the ensuing possession and Dordt’s three on the other end was off the mark allowing the Mustangs to run out the clock.
Dordt is 4-3 overall and 0-2 in the GPAC.
Morningside is 5-0 overall and 1-0 in the GPAC.
