Dordt and Morningside battled to the end in women’s basketball on Saturday afternoon in Sioux City, Iowa.  The hosts were able to hold off the Defenders and took an 81-78 win from the Defenders in Dordt’s first loss of the season.

The Defenders held an 18-16 lead after one quarter with Morningside getting a three-point shot at the end of the period to cut a the five point lead down to two.

The second quarter featured five ties with Morningside getting up by as many as six points in the period.  Dordt rallied from the six point deficit with 2:30 left in the half with a pair of Erika Feenstra free throws and Rachel Evavold knocked down a pair to get Dordt within 42-40.   Baylee Tetzlaff followed with a steal and basket and Karly Gustafson ended the half with a basket to end the eight point run for the Defenders and put Dordt up 44-42.

Evavold started the second half with a basket to make it a 10-0 run.  Morningside regrouped and eventually built the lead back up to 61-55.   The Defenders again rallied with Bailey Beckman knocking down a three with 1:09 left in the third for a 65-64 lead.  A bucket by Erika Feenstra extended the lead to 67-64 but Morningside matched that bucket and it was 67-66 going into the fourth period.

Karly Gustafson started the fourth quarter with a three-point basket to lead 70-66 but a pair of free throws at the 8:04 mark ignited a Morningside run that pushed the Mustang ahead 77-70. The 11 point run ended on a pair of free throws with 5:04 left in the game.

Dordt battled to within 77-76 after a pair of Gustafson free throws but Morningside’s Taylor Rodenburgh extended the lead to 79-76 on its next possession.  A pair of Feenstra free throws made it 79-78 and Dordt forced  turnover on the next possession. Dordt ran the clock under :20 and called a timeout and got a shot close to the basket with :10 left but missed.  Morningside secured the rebound, made two free throws after quick Dordt foul and a three by Dordt at the buzzer was off the mark for the 81-78 final.

Dordt is 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the GPAC.

Morningside is 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the GPAC.
