Sioux Center, Iowa — A Sioux Center man is behind bars facing felony theft charges after authorities say he stole money from the Shell Sioux-per Center in Sioux Center.

According to court documents, 19-year-old Darian TeGrotenhuis is accused of entering the convenience store on Sioux Center’s north side at about 2:05 a.m. on Wednesday, October 3rd, approaching the counter, and stealing over $1600 in cash, over $1300 in checks, and $8.60 in coupons while the store clerk was outside the business. He was arrested the next day.

The criminal complaint filed by the arresting Sioux Center Police Department officer claims that TeGrotenhuis implicated himself by making statements and that he was identified by witnesses. He is charged with Second Degree Theft, a class D felony.

Sioux County Jail records say that at last report, TeGrotenhuis remained in their custody in lieu of a $5000 bond. Court documents say he faces a preliminary hearing on the matter on Tuesday, October 16th in Sioux County District Court in Orange City.
