The Dordt College Defender men’s basketball team suffered an offensive lull midway through the second half and never recovered in dropping a 90-77 decision to the Morningside Mustangs on Wednesday night in Sioux City.

The Defenders led almost the entire first half, taking a 9-2 lead just three minutes into the game as Marcus Winterfeld scored seven of Dordt’s first nine points. The lead grew to 11 on an Andrew O’Donnell lay up with 9:28 left in the half but the Mustangs showed some life by coming back to take a 32-31 lead and two ties ensued at 32-32 and 35-35. Over the final 2:55 of the half the Defenders outscored the hosts 10-3 and took a 45-38 lead.

Dordt was able to push the lead to 11 on two occasions in the second half and led 67-58 with 11:19 remaining in the game after a Ben Gesink lay up. Morningside went on a 15-0 run over the next 4:08 and led 73-67 before Kyle Lang converted a basket.

Dordt got as close as two, the last time at 77-75 with 4:07 left and the Mustangs closed the game with a seven point run to win 90-77.
