Hawarden, Iowa — A Hawarden man is behind bars now, after an 8-hour standoff with police.

Sioux City TV station KTIV is reporting that about 7 PM Saturday night, police were called to a Hawarden home for a domestic assault call. The victim reported that 31-year-old Paul Long threatened her with a handgun. She told authorities that there were several weapons inside the home, and that Long had said that law officers would have to shoot him if they came inside the house.

That’s when the standoff began. It didn’t end until 3 o’clock Sunday morning when authorities entered the home. They found Long hiding in the attic. He was taken into custody and charged with aggravated domestic abuse assault and child endangerment.
