Sioux Center, Iowa — Seven young people were charged with alcohol violations after a party near Sioux Center.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Friday, June 26, in the 10 PM hour, their deputies investigated a report of underage drinking of alcohol that allegedly occurred at a home on Dove Avenue, seven miles west of Sioux Center.

Upon further investigation, deputies believe several people under the age of 21 were consuming alcohol.

They charged 19-year-old Nicholas Rosenboom and 19-year-old Kirk Postrollo both of Boyden; 20-year-old Brandon Driesen of Hull; 19-year-old Shelby Altena of Fairview, SD; 19-year-ols Mariah Jansma of Doon; 18-year-old Vanessa Van Kley of Rock Valley; and 19-year-old Hayden Fluit of Inwood with underage possession of alcohol.

Fluit was also arrested on a charge of interference with official acts.

sioux county sheriff emblemMaurice, IA — A Sioux Falls man’s drive trailer was damaged when the driver struck a light pole on Monday, June 29th near Maurice.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports, that at about 9:49 am on Monday, June 29th, 61-year-old Warren Barse was driving a 2001 Kenworth W900 semi-tractor pulling a Trail King Trailer and a smaller drive trailer designed to assist hauling over-sized loads northbound on Highway 75. According to the report, Barse turned left onto Highway 10 when the rear axles of the drive trailer malfunctioned and struck an Iowa Department of Transportation light pole.

The drive trailer received $500 damage; the light pole received $3000 damage.

No injuries were reported.

Sheldon, Iowa — Louisiana Governor and Republican Presidential candidate Bobby Jindal is coming to Sheldon.

We’re being told he’ll be here on Friday, July 3rd at 3 PM at Jard, Inc. Jard is a gun manufacturer about a half mile north of Highway 18 and Country Club Road. That’s just north of the Risefest grounds. His visit is open to the public.

Again Louisiana Governor and 2016 Presidential candidate Bobby Jindal will be at Jard, Inc. on Friday at 3 PM. The Jard event will include a meet and greet that will be open to the public.

Jindal will start off the day at the Sioux Center Livestock Company Restaurant on South Highway 75 in Sioux Center. Governor Jindal will come by table-to-table to introduce himself and answer questions. That will run from 8 until 9:30 AM. At 11:30 AM, Jindal will have a lunchtime retail Event at Pizza Ranch in Rock Rapids on South Highway 75.
At 2, it’s on to Sibley for a Business tour of ammunition and firearms manufacturer Capital Armament Company at 1201 11th Avenue. Then at 3, it’s time for the Sheldon stop. He’ll wrap up the day with a dinner retail event at 5:30 at Gary’s on the River in Spencer.

Sheldon, Iowa — The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office is looking for the public’s help to solve a puppy-napping.
They report that on Sunday evening, June 28, deputies were called to investigate a burglary and theft that occurred at 3D/Dobermans, at 3225 Larch Avenue, in rural Sheldon.

Deputies believe that sometime in the afternoon hours on June 28, the perpetrator(s) entered the kennels and stole a four-day-old male Doberman Pinscher puppy.

The dog has an estimated value of $500.

Rock Valley, Iowa — A manufacturing plant was saved from fire on Friday, June 26, 2015 in Rock Valley.

According to Rock Valley Fire Chief John Wallenberg, about 8:30 AM, the Rock Valley Fire Department was called to the report of structure fire at TCS Manufacturing, the former Kooima Manufacturing plant at 2080 Tenth Street in Rock Valley.

The chief says that when they got there, the fire department saw all the employees had been evacuated. He says they saw lots of smoke from the south end of the building as they approached the scene. He says they used water to fight the fire.

He says the cause of the fire is officially unknown, but it was contained to outside in the air filtering system outside of the building. He says he believes a filter started on fire and that started the rest of the fire. He says there was also some duct work damage, as it was a very hot fire.

Chief Wallenberg reports that the filtering system was destroyed, and there was lots of smoke in the building.

He says they used less than a thousand gallons of water to fight the fire, and crews were on scene 45 minutes.

Wallenberg says there were no injuries were reported.

He says they originally called the Hull Fire Department for help, and they were on their way, but when Rock Valley Firefighters knew what they were dealing with, they told the Hull department that they were not needed this time.

Boyden, IA — A George woman’s vehicle was damaged in an accident on Friday, June 26th, near Boyden.

sioux county sheriff emblemThe Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports, that at about 2:29 pm on the 26th, 62-year-old Linda Groen of George, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Impala northbound on Kennedy Avenue. According to the report, Groen lost control of her vehicle, struck a mailbox, and entered the east ditch.

The Impala received $3000 damage.

No injuries were reported.

Hudson, SD — A Little Rock woman was taken to the hospital after an accident near Hudson, SD.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that about 1:35 PM on Saturday, June 27, 2015, 29-year-old Miley Hoting of Little Rock was driving a 1995 Honda motorcycle eastbound on B30, a mile east of Hudson, SD, but across the Big Sioux River in Sioux County, Iowa.

According to the report, Hoting said that he had not driven a motorcycle regularly for about six years. The report says he failed to navigate a sharp curve to the left. The motorcycle left the roadway, entered the south ditch, and rolled. Both the motorcycle and the driver came to rest in the south ditch. The driver told the trooper that there was nothing wrong with the motorcycle. Hoting said that it was his operator error that caused the collision.

A South Dakota ambulance took Hoting to Sioux Center Health.

Hoting’s Honda motorcycle sustained $4000 in damages.

Mr. Bennet Vaas, age 77, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2015, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, July 1, at 10:30 am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers, with the Rev. Mark Haverdink officiating.  Burial will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.  There will be a family prayer service on Wednesday, at 9:15 am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 5:00 pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home of Orange City, which is in charge of the arrangements for Bennet Vaas of Orange City.

Ireton, Iowa — A Hawarden woman was taken to the hospital after an accident near Ireton on Thursday, June 25.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that shortly before 4 PM, 38-year-old Alejandra Chavez of Hawarden was driving a 2002 Pontiac Montana minivan westbound on Highway 10, two miles northwest of Ireton. The report says she lost control of the vehicle, which entered the north ditch and rolled.

The Ireton Ambulance took Chavez to the Hawarden Hospital.

The Pontiac sustained approximately $4,500 in damages.

Chavez was cited for failure to maintain control of her vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that the Ireton Fire Department, Ireton Ambulance crew and the Iowa State Patrol assisted them on the scene.

Thunder In The Valley

The 12th Annual Thunder in the Valley Outlaw Truck & Tractor Pull will take place on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11 at the Thunder in the Valley Tractor Pulling Arena in Rock Valley, Iowa. This pull is an Outlaw Ultimate National Truck & Tractor Pull, one of the largest pulls across the Midwest.  It has also been voted ‘Pull of the Year’ 10 years in a row by the Iowa Tractor Pulling Association and seven times by the Outlaw Truck & Tractor Pulling Association.

There are two tracks, two sleds, and three sessions featuring all classes.  The event kicks off on Friday, July 10, at 7:00 p.m.  On Saturday, July 11, the event resumes at 12:30 p.m. and then again at 6:00 p.m.  Concessions are available and coolers are permitted.

“This will be bigger and better than ever this year, featuring 14 classes of pulling vehicles during three sessions and paying out a purse over $100,000,” says Rich Rozeboom.

Thunder in the Valley Pulling Arena recently made upgrades to their facility including; additional bleacher seating, a larger pit parking area and free camping sites.

The city of Rock Valley has hosted pulls for many years and 12 years ago Valley Pullers partnered with Outlaw Truck and Tractor Pulling Association. The first Outlaw pull only had three classes with a purse of $12,000.  Valley Pullers Inc., has 10 directors that promote the pulls each year in Rock Valley. There are approximately 250 volunteers.

Rozeboom says “We wouldn’t be able to pull off this event without the help of our volunteers and sponsors. We are so grateful for their help.”
