Spirit Lake, Iowa – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources issues a weekly fishing report on Thursdays in an effort to provide the latest Iowa DNRinformation heading into the weekend. The weekly fishing report is compiled from information gathered from local bait shops, angler creel surveys, and county and state parks staff. For more information contact the Spirit Lake fish Hatchery at 712-336-1840.


Storm Lake (including Little Storm Lake)

There is about 6.5 inches of ice in the east part of the lake, but the rest of the lake has around four inches. Walleye – Fair: Some walleye are being picked up on the east side of the lake off the east boat ramp and campground area.

Big Spirit Lake

Walleye – Good: Walleye still being caught off of Big Stoney Point. With ice thickness increasing, atv and snowmobile traffic should be safe at this point. The walleye are being caught using Minnows below a bobber. The bite is slow but many walleyes are being caught.

East Okoboji Lake

Channel Catfish – No Report: Limited fishing activity, foot traffic only.

Silver Lake (Dickinson)

Walleye – No Report: Poor ice conditions exist on the east end of the lake extending from the north to south shorelines.

Hull, Iowa — A Fairfax, MN man was injured when his semi-tractor and tanker trailer overturned Tuesday morning five miles northwest of Hull.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 7:21 am Tuesday morning, 29-year-old Daniel Rettman of Fairfax, MN was driving a 2005 Western Star semi-tractor pulling a tanker trailer northbound on Highway 75. According to the report, Rettmann turned west onto 280th Street, started backing the semi-tractor and trailer eastbound across Highway 75 when the trailer entered the east ditch of Highway 75 and overturned.

The Semi-tractor received $10,000 damage. The trailer received $30,000 damage.

Highway 75 was closed for 7 1/2 hours for the wreckage to be cleared.


Rettmann reported minor injuries and was transported by private vehicle to the Sioux Center Hospital.

Rettmann was cited for unsafe backing.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Hull Ambulance, Hull Fire Department, Iowa State Patrol, and Iowa Department of Transportation.

Sioux Center, Iowa — A Rock Valley man faces charges following an investigation into a single-vehicle rollover accident west of Sioux HuizengaCenter early Sunday.

According to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, their deputies investigated a motor vehicle accident that occurred at the intersection of 380th and Fig Avenue, five miles west of Sioux Center, about 3:15 Sunday morning.

Upon arrival at the accident location, deputies reportedly found a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, owned by 33-year old Seth Huizenga, of Rock Valley.  Deputies say the Chevrolet had rolled and the driver of the vehicle left the area and could not be located. Deputies later reportedly located the driver of the vehicle early Sunday afternoon at his residence near Rock Valley.  Deputies say that further investigation revelaed that 33-year old Craig Huizenga was driving the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Fig Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle, entered the west ditch, rolled the vehicle and left the area on foot.

Huizenga reported minor injuries and declined further medical attention.

The Chevrolet sustained approximately $8,000 in damages.

Deputies say that Craig Huizenga was arrested for Operating A Vehicle Without The Owner’s Consent, as well as Driving A Vehicle While His Driver’s License Was Revoked.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Sioux Center Police Department.

Hospers, Iowa — A Hospers woman escaped injury when she struck a deer with her minivan near Hospers Sunday evening.

Sioux County deputies say 67-year old Katherine Carver was eastbound on 400th Street, two miles west of Hospers about 6:15 Sunday in a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country minivan when she struck a deer in the roadway.

Deputies estimate damage to the minivan at $3500.  No injuries were reported.

Mr. Fred De Jong, age 84, of Hull, passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2014, at the Hegg Memorial Health Center in Rock Valley.

There will be a memorial service on Friday, January 2, at 11:00am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Loren Kotman will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a family prayer service on Friday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, at the funeral home.

accidentRock Valley, Iowa — A Rock Valley man escaped injury when a deer ran into the path of his vehicle Saturday evening near Rock Valley.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that shortly before 10 o’clock Saturday evening, a 2010 Ford Edge, driven by 36-year old Nathan Van Oort was eastbound on Highway 18, about two miles west of Rock Valley when he struck a deer on the roadway.

Damage was estimated at $5500 to Van Oort’s Ford.

The Rock Valley Police Department assisted deputies at the scene.

Hull, Iowa — The eastern half of Hull was without power for about two hours Saturday morning as the result of a construction accident.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened when 34-year old Joe Vollink of Boyden was operating a Case 580 Super N backhoe, clearing snow on the parking lot at First Reformed Church, located at 911 2nd Street in Hull, shortly after 8:30 Saturday morning.  Deputies say Vollink struck a Mid-American Energy utility pole on the lot, knocking down power lines and two electrical transformers, causing the power outage that affected residential areas and businesses in eastern Hull.

No injuries were reported.

The utility pole, power lines and transformers sustained approximately $10,000 in damages, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Hawarden, Iowa —  Two Hawarden men were jailed in connection with a string of burglaries in and around Hawarden Tuesday.  Hawarden Police identify the pair as 18-year old Kyle James Bottorf and 22-year old Roy Lee McDermott, both of Hawarden.

handcuffs - subject inAccording to Hawarden Police,  Tuesday, at approximately 3:20 a.m., an Officer of the Hawarden Police Department was checking businesses when he came across a burglary in progress at a business in the outlying Hawarden area. Assistance from additional officers of the Hawarden Police Department and Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, including their K-9, were called.  Police saythe discovered that someone had broken a window and entered an office building, but were able to get out of the building before additional officers arrived on the scene.

Using evidence left at the scene officers say they were able to track down Bottorff and McDermott at their respective apartments in Hawarden. Further investigation found that Bottorff was allegedly involved in two additional burglaries in Hawarden earlier in the night, while McDermott was allegedly involved in one of the burglaries in Hawarden with Bottorff, and that Bottorff was allegeldy involved in two previous burglaries in and around Hawarden.

According to authorities, Bottorff was charged by Hawarden Police with 3 counts of Burglary in the 3rd degree, 2 counts of Theft in the 2nd Degree, 1 count of Theft in the 4th Degree, and Possession of Marijuana. Additionally the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office charged Bottorff with 2 counts of Burglary in the 3rd Degree, Possession of Stolen Property, Theft in the 2nd Degree, and Criminal Mischief in the 4th/5th degree. Bottorff was reportedly taken to the Sioux County Jail on an $11,000.00 bond.

Police say McDermott was charged by the Hawarden Police Department with Burglary in the 3rd degree, Theft in the 2nd Degree, and Possession of Marijuana. Additionally the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office charged him with Burglary in the 3rd degree and Possession of Stolen Property. Police say McDermott was also transported to the Sioux County Jail on a $10,000.00 bond.

Hull, Iowa — A 53-year old Hull man was arrested by Sioux County Deputies around 2:30 Saturday morning in Hull.

According to authorities, the arrest of Gary Kats stemmed from a domestic disturbance that allegedly occurred at a residence in Hull.  Cops say Kats was arrested for Enhanced Penalty Domestic Abuse Assault and Possession Of Firearms And Ammunition After A Prior Domestic Assault Conviction.
