MOC FloydValley swept a Siouxland Conference basketball doubleheader from the Orabs in Sheldon Tuesday night. The boy’s game went to the top ranked Dutch 59-23. The girl’s game went to the third ranked Lady Dutch 66-20.

In the girls game MOC Floyd Valley led 37-7 on the way to their 19th win. Alexis Conaway led all scorers with 15. Sheldon was led by Krista Bousema with 5 points.

 With the win the Lady Dutch ranked number 3 in the 3A poll are 16-0 in the conference and 19-0 for the season.

 

In the boys game the Dutch held a 42-12 halftime lead on route to their 18th win of the season. Daniel Jansen and Justin Van Kalsbeek shared game high honors with 14 points each. Sheldon had one player in double figures as Trevor Johnson knocked down a trio of three-pointers as part of an 11 point night.

 With the win MOC Floyd Valley the top ranked team in 3A in the latest Radio Iowa Poll remains unbeaten on the year at 18-0 and 15-0 in the Siouxland.

Northwestern guard Kami Kuhlmann is this weeks GPAC/Hauff Mid-America Sports Player-of-the-Week.

Kuhlmann, a senior from Charter Oak, Iowa, averaged 15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and five assists per game as the Red Raiders posted two wins over ranked opponents on the week (2 Briar Cliff and 18 Hastings).

For the week she made 5-8 three pointers (63%) and was 6-7 at the foul line. Ninth ranked Northwestern opens the week at 17-5 overall and 11-3 in the GPAC.

A Rock Valley man was injured in an accident on Friday near Rock Valley.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 3:40 that afternoon, 32-year-old Lance Rus of Rock Valley parked a 2006 Peterbilt semi tractor-trailer on Elmwood Avenue, two miles north of Rock Valley, facing north. Seventy-four-year-old Walter Groeneweg of Rock Valley was driving a 2010 Chevrolet pickup

KIWA Radio in conjunction with SESAC and the International Broadcasters Idea Bank are offering  a scholarship of $7,500 to a junior or senior (as of September 2012) at a college or university that offers undergraduate training in radio broadcasting related programs, such as advertising, mass media, communications, or journalism. Some radio experience is considered as a positive, but is not required. This scholarship is funded by SESAC, a music licensing company, (www.sesac.com) which contracts with radio stations for the rights to broadcast their material.

  1. In order to qualify for the grant, the applicant must meet the following conditions:

 

  • Is now attending, and is in good standing, a college or university in the United States. Freshmen students are not eligible. You must be at least a sophomore as of February 2012.

 

  • Select a course of study relating to a career in some aspect of radio broadcasting.

 

  • Exhibit grades in previous academic work, which, in the judgment of the IBIB, are adequate to give reasonable assurance of success in earning a degree in a program, outlined above.

 

  • Be of good moral character.

 

  • Supply all of the information requested on the Official Scholarship Application Form.

 

  • Intend to pursue a career in broadcasting.

 

  1. 3.      Applicants must return forms to: Scholarship Committee, IBIB, PO Box 2448, Danville, VA 24541-0448, postmarked in time to arrive before the deadline (see Rule 4, below). Unemployment in Lyon and Sioux Counties continues to be the lowest in Iowa.

 

The December figures were just released, and Lyon County still holds the low spot with 3.0 percent unemployment.  However, since the figures are not adjusted for seasonal work and some people are unemployed only because it’s winter — the figure is up from the November rate of 2  .4 percent.  Last year at this time, it was 3.3 percent.  In Sioux County, December unemployment was at 3.6 percent.  That’s up from the November number of 2.8 percent, but even with last year at this time.
