Mrs. Katie Van Berkum, age 94, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2011, at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.
There will be a memorial service on Monday, April 4, at 10:30am, in the chapel of the First Reformed Church in Orange City. Mr. Thomas Hydeen will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Sherman Township Cemetery, near Maurice. There will be a prayer service on Monday, at 9:15am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.
Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, at the funeral home.
Katie was born on November 17, 1916, near Ireton, the daughter of John and Maggie (Roelfson) Peuse. She was raised near Ireton, Alton, and Orange City.
In 1936, her mother passed away. In 1946, her father, her sister, Mattie, and Katie moved into Orange City. There she did housework for many people. Her father passed away in 1948.
On August 25, 1955, she married Alvin John Van Berkum in Orange City. They farmed northwest of Orange City. In 1961, they moved into Orange City, where Katie was employed at the Golden Rule Store, Ben Franklin Store, ABC Grocery Store, and Dutch Mill Restaurant. Alvin passed away on November 8, 1995, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
In October of 2000, she became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. Later, she transferred to the Happy Siesta Care Center in Remsen, and in 2006, she returned to Orange City, to live at the Heritage House.
Mrs. Van Berkum was a member of the First Reformed Church. She enjoyed bowling and belonged to a women’s league for many years, well into her 80s.
Survivors include a step-son and his wife, Douglas and Linda Van Berkum, of Orange City; three step-grandchildren and their spouses, Gayle and Jeff Hayden, Rachel and Rick Drago, and David and Jane Van Berkum, all of Colorado; six step-great-grandchildren, Olivia Mae, Gabryelle, and Hannah Hayden; and Mary-Anne, Caroline, and Derek Van Berkum; and many nephews and nieces.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Sarah Den Ouden, Jennie Van Roekel, Minnie Bras, and Mattie Peuse; and four brothers, William, Everett, John, and Henry Peuse; and a step-daughter, Glenda Van Berkum.
Memorials will be directed to the church.
